Haka enchants crowd at DU

Throughout the 7s competition, it was clear New Zealand had the most support from the Indians at the Delhi University ground. India isn't a big rugby playing nation, but every time the All Blacks entered the pitch, the noise was deafening

"Fantastic, energetic, and aggressive. I want to play rugby," said Diwakal, a student at the university who had never played or seen rugby before. "I used to play cricket, snooker… but now I'm looking for a rugby team in Delhi."

The enthusiasm was shared by most of the spectators. When the ball hit the stands from a conversion or penalty, the volunteers on the pitch had to wait several minutes before receiving it, the oval being passed about and examined carefully on the stands. The Kenyan team came a close second in the affections of the crowd, but not everyone wanted to begin practicing the sport like Diwakal.

"It's the most interesting sport I've ever seen. I'd like to try it with my friends but I don't think they will. There are too many chances too get hurt," said Gurmeet, a CWG volunteer.

In fact, a number of people asked said they wouldn't play because it would be 'too dangerous'.

But the physical aspect definitely made for great viewing. The south stand erupted in cheers every time New Zealand scored, "it has to be them, they're the champions," said Arjun, also a student.
