High power panel likely to go into pending CBI cases
The government may constitute a high-powered committee to analyse and close some of the over 9,000 CBI cases pending in courts, Minister for Personnel Prithviraj Chavan said on Thursday.

Addressing the concluding session of the 17th biennial conference on anti-corruption, he said such fast track mechanism could help the CBI to focus on "big fish" as suggested by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
"A lot of brainstorming is going on in the department, CBI and DoPT," he said, adding that the government was pondering whether a high powered panel, chaired by a former Chief Justice or a former Central Vigilance Commissioner, could be set up.
The panel could have a look at the pending cases, some of which took 10-15 years for disposal. "We need to introspect whether some fast track mechanism can be found to close some cases," he said.
Promising all help to the CBI and anti-corruption officials, Chavan said the dynamics of corruption is changing.
He agreed that there is a delay in granting permission for prosecution against senior government officials and that the government is trying to speed up the mechanism.
The conference adopted eight resolutions including those for setting up a National Mission against Corruption and taking steps to ratify the UN Convention against corruption.
It also sought the passing of the Whistle Blower Act by the Parliament.
