The 27-year-old housewife and her five-year-old daughter died, her five-month-old son survived.

The woman identified as Veenu, who goes by her first name only, was allegedly “forced to end her life owing to ill treatment, and constant harassment for money from her in-laws”, police said.

On Sunday around 7 p.m., Veenu, a resident of Mahendru Enclave in North Delhi, left her house with the two children in a Santro car.

“She drove till Subzi Mandi, parked her car some 40 metres away and walked towards the railway tracks,” said Bhairon Singh Gurjar, additional deputy commissioner of police (railways).

“She threw herself in front of a train along with her daughter. The son miraculously escaped the tragedy as he fell on the side of the tracks.”

Her daughter Muskaan succumbed to injuries at the Sir Gangaram Hospital on Pusa Road on Monday, while her son Abhiyan is safe, police said.

“We found a suicide note in her car addressed to her own parents saying she was very sad and fed up with life and that is why she had decided to jump in front of the railway tracks around 7 p.m. last evening,” the officer said.

The victim’s family alleged Veenu was being tortured by the parents of Vikas, her husband. She was married to Vikas, a plastic factory owner, six years ago.

After a preliminary enquiry conducted by the sub divisional magistrate (SDM), police detained Veenu’s parents-in-law and Vikas.

Police said they would register a case of dowry harassment.

“We gave them whatever they asked for,” said Subhash Vij, her uncle. Veenu’s father, Jagdish Vij, runs a guesthouse near Kalyanpuri home in East Delhi.

“Their demands kept escalating every year but we still managed,” he said.

“This time, her father-in-law asked us for money for some property that he wanted to purchase.”

The Vij household held Veenu’s parents-in-law directly responsible for the death.

“They had made her life hell. They used to taunt her to ask for money from her parents on some pretext or the other. Veenu couldn’t take it anymore,” Vij alleged.

The police also recovered a feeding bottle and some clothes of the baby from the car.
