Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology becomes first tech varsity for women

The country’s first-ever technical university for women was inaugurated here on Thursday. The Indira Gandhi Delhi Technological University (IGDTU) has been upgraded from the erstwhile Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology which was set up in 1998. The varsity will offer four BTech courses and five MTech programmes that include a Master’s degree in computer applications.

“The university will impart quality education to women, so that well-qualified female engineers become part of the workforce to meet growing demands of the industry,” said Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit after unveiling the website and the admission brochures of the varsity at its Kashmere Gate-based campus in north Delhi.

“It is a non-affiliated teaching and research university to facilitate and promote research and innovation in the field of engineering, technology, applied sciences and management,” Dikshit said.

The varsity, Dikshit said, will initially have 480 seats. Eighty-five per cent seats would be reserved for Delhi girls.

Delhi higher education minister Ashok Kumar Walia said the new university would help improving number of women engineers in prominent Indian companies as well as in multi-national companies.
