Intelligent signals for BRT in offing

According to the officials of Delhi Integrated Multi Modal Transit System (DIMTS) — the agency operating and maintaining the corridor — the installation of ISS is

almost complete on all eight intersections along the corridor and test and trial would be carried out at Chirag Dilli intersection on July 16 and 17.

However, tests and trials may result in traffic snarls along the corridor.

"Though our attempt is to carry out the testing with least disruption to traffic and inconvenience to the commuters, there may be some minor traffic disturbances," a DIMTS spokesperson said.

During the trial, said officials, the computer installed at the intersection would capture the exact number of vehicles plying on each arm of the intersection.

It will then analyse the time required to clear traffic at each arm and stoppage time that needs to be given to the other arms.

The software has been designed in a manner that it will give priority to buses, an official said.

Though there has been evident improvement in movement of buses and other vehicles ever since the BRT corridor was opened for trial runs two years ago, Chirag Dilli continues to be a choke point with waiting time stretching up to 30 minutes during peak hours.

With ISS, the officials expect to improve traffic flow along the entire corridor and especially at the busy crossings of Chirag Dilli and Archana Complex.

The new signal system is likely to be fully functional by end of August.

The officials said ISS would also be extended on the remaining 8.7-kilometre stretch of BRT corridor up to Delhi Gate.
