JNU to reserve faculty posts

The Executive Council (EC) of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Tuesday decided to implement the SC/ST reservation in faculty posts in JNU.

The actual appointment process, however, will start only after the University Grants Commission notifies the revised guidelines (on required qualifications and salary scale) for appointment to various posts in the wake of the 6th Pay Commission changes.
Once these directives are issued, the JNU administration will start the appointments in faculty posts as per the advertisements.
The EC did not take any decision on changing the JNU Act to make the vice-chancellor eligible for a second term.
The council deferred the issue to the next EC meeting since there was no consensus among the members.
The JNU Teacher’s Association and the students had earlier opposed any such change in the Act, calling it an attempt to “tamper with the very ethos that define JNU.”
Students protested outside the administrative building while the meeting was on.
“JNU's students and faculty contested and exposed the attempt to scuttle or at least delay the process of implementation of the legally mandated SC/ST reservations in all faculty posts,” said Sucheta De, general secretary, All India Students Association, JNU.
