Police said, since she had left behind no suicide note, they were trying to ascertain why she took the extreme step. Ali worked as senior sub-editor at The Times of India.

"The incident was discovered when her husband Joyjeet, a journalist at Mail Today, asked a neighbour to find out where Ali was as she wasn’t responding to his phone calls," a senior police officer said. Ali was to report for duty at 4 pm.

"When she didn’t open the door despite repeated knocking, the neighbour entered the house from the balcony. Inside, he found her hanging from the ceiling fan," said the officer.

The couple had got married a year ago, police said.
