Delhi Lieutenant Governor Tejinder Khanna on Thursday ordered the arrest of those responsible for the assault on the MCD junior engineer on Monday. According to leader of the House in the South Corporation, Subhash Arya, the L-G, while meeting top functionaries of the three civic bodies, said that the FIR against the JE had no substance and would be investigated.

“The L-G after hearing the JE’s case called the director (law & order) and asked him to immediately prepare an arrest order against the people who had assaulted him. He said that the counter-complaint had no substance and ordered investigation into the matter,” Arya said. Junior engineer MC Meena was allegedly harassed by MLA Shoaib Iqbal, his son councillor Aale Mohammad and two other city zone councillors, Irfan and Rakesh Kumar, as he had gone to demolish illegal constructions in the Darya Ganj area.

Leader of the House of the North civic body, Mahender Nagpal, who was part of the contingent that met the LG, said Khanna heard the whole issue and asked his staff to take action. “He said that the complaint by the woman was fake and asked for the arrest of the four, who had assaulted the junior engineer, who was just performing his duties,” Nagpal said.

The junior engineers of the city zone under the North Corporation had gone on a dharna on Wednesday. However, after meeting commissioner PK Gupta, who assured them that he would take up the matter with the police authorities, they called off their protest.

According to a source in the North Corporation, uniform action against illegal constructions and properties will be taken up. “Unauthorised constructions by builder lobbies which have mushroomed across colonies in the city will be targeted,” he said.
