Liquor turns killer again on city’s roads

A Delhi Metro traffic marshal was killed and four others were injured in separate incidents of drink driving in the city, early on Tuesday, reports HT Correspondent.

In the first accident, a speeding Innova crushed to death a traffic marshal and critically injured another one near a metro construction site in Mehrauli, around 4am.

Satpal, the driver of the Innova, which used to run as a tourist taxi, has been arrested. A medical examination confirmed that he was under the influence of alcohol.

Police said he lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a diversion near pillar 52 and hit the two guards.

While 29-year-old Manish Kumar died on the spot, the condition of the other guard, Manoj Mishra (39), is said to be critical. A case has been registered at Mehrauli police station.

In another accident, three men in a Swift car suffered minor injuries when their car overturned near Akshardham flyover in east Delhi.

Police said the driver of the car, Tushar Singh, a resident of Vaishali, was under the influence of alcohol and was driving at a speed of over 100 kmph. The incident was reported around 3 am on Tuesday.

“There was a police picket nearby and they rescued the occupants of the car. They were rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, where a medical report confirmed that Singh was in an inebriated state,” a senior police officer said.

In another accident, an army man on his scooter was crushed to death after a truck hit him near Dhaula Kuan.
