Mamata blames passengers for stampede, orders inquiry

Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has reportedly blamed the public for the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station in which at least two people were killed and 15 injured, media reports said.

Mamata reportedly gave a clean chit to the railway authorities but blamed the passengers for the mishap.

The stampeded happened after the Railway authorities changed the platforms of the trains without making any formal announcement to this regard.

However, Mamata Banerjee ordered an enquiry into the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station which claimed two lives and announced a compensation of Rs two lakh to the next of kin of the deceased.

Banerjee, who is in Kolkata, instructed officials to ensure that strict action is taken against those responsible for the stampede which took place this afternoon, a senior Railway Ministry official said.

She announced Rs two lakh compensation to the next of kin of the deceased, besides Rs 50,000 for those grievously injured. Railways will pay Rs 15,000 to those who suffered minor injuries in the incident, the official said.

According to Railway officials, a 35-year-old woman and a young boy were killed and seven others, including three women, were injured in the incident.
