On Friday morning, a 50-year-old woman, Monica Mangal, and her 20-year-old daughter, Megha, were assaulted by an unidentified man, who later turned out to be the boyfriend of the woman's elder daughter.

The man, 25-year-old Ankur Sabharwal, allegedly wanted to kill Monica because she objected to his relationship with her elder daughter, Shivangi.

He has been arrested.

The victims are in Moolchand Hospital and are said to be in critical condition.

The incident happened in B-Block Lajpat Nagar when Monica’s husband Sanjay had gone to drop Shivangi (23), a schoolteacher, and son Ashish to school.

“Monica knew Ankur was married and had a daughter; that is why she told Shivangi to stay away from him. Ankur told them he would divorce his wife and then marry Shivangi. But Monica objected to it," said a senior police officer on the condition of anonymity.

The police said that Ankur thought to get rid of Monica so that he could marry Shivangi. They said Ankur came to Lajpat Nagar, where the Mangal family lives on rent, on Friday around 7.30 a.m. “He knew she (Monica) would alone at the time. He told Monica he had come to clear things. The two again had a fight. He then allegedly hit on her head. Hearing her screams, her younger daughter Megha also came out and he hit her as well,” added the officer.

Bharat Bhushan Bhutani, the house owner who was taking a morning walk, tried to nab the assailant. “My wife heard screams from the first floor flat. When I was on my way, the attacker rushed out of the house and tried to hit me too. I tried to grab him and then pushed him down the stairs. In the scuffle the keys of his car fell, but he managed to run away.”
