Maruti turmoil: talks fail, three union leaders arrested

The workers insisted on reinstatement of all 62 sacked colleagues and refused to sign the Good Conduct Bond (GCB), while the management offered to take back 12 of the 18 trainees and six workers only.
The arrested persons included the president and the general secretary of the illegally constituted union at the Manesar-based plant of Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL).
On the other hand, the MSIL management is trying to resolve the issue using various channels and has communicated with all 350 technician trainees, asking them to resume duties at the Manesar plant in three days.
In a MSIL statement issued to the media on Monday, the company stated that it would encourage workers to sign the Good Conduct Bond, and resume duties without any fear or apprehension and work towards restoring normalcy.
On the other hand, the arrests were made immediately after the tripartite talks being held in the Huda Gymkhana Club in Sector 29 failed to break the ice on Sunday.
Haryana labour commissioner Satwanti Ahalwat, officials of the MSIL management and union leaders attended the meeting.
According to the police, all three were accused in a recent incident of assault on the 11 supervisors, who were attacked when they were on their way to the factory.
They were booked under various sections of the IPC included rioting, assaulting and threatening to kill.
The MSIL workers related to the rebel Maruti Suzuki Employees Union said the management was hell bent to make the workers sign the GCB, which was unacceptable.
The MSIL statement said the management had started talks with the aim of arriving at a solution.
