MCD junior engineer sentenced to 3-year jail in bribe case

A court in New Delhi on Monday sentenced a Junior Engineer of MCD to three years rigorous imprisonment (RI) for taking bribe from a complainant for allowing him to carry out unauthorised construction.

Special Judge AS Yadav held Mukesh Kumar Meena(34), posted at the slum department in the MCD in Badarpur, guilty of accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 from the complainant Murari. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 40,000 on Meena.

"Deterrent punishment should be imposed to curb the evil of corruption. Today it seems that honesty is a very rare deed. Very few person muster the courage to report the matter regarding demand of bribe. Otherwise, under compulsion they are forced to pay the bribe," the court said.

According to the prosecution, Meena, who was posted as a Junior Engineer in the slum department of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) in Badarpur area allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 10,000 from Murari, a resident of Badarpur, for not stopping his unauthorised construction work.

Murari expressed his inability in paying the bribe to Meena and filed a complaint with the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB).
The ACB sleuths caught Meena allegedly while receiving a bribe of Rs 5,000 from Murari on March 9, 2002.

The prosecution produced 11 witnesses to prove its case against the convict Meena, who was convicted under sections 7 and 13 of the Prevention of Corruption (PC) Act, 1988.

"The prosecution has been able to prove its case against the convict Meena. He has been sentenced to three years in prison for the offence," the court said.
