Medha Patkar case; daily told to publish apology

A court in New Delhi today asked the editor of an English daily to publish an "apology" in his paper as per the undertaking given in connection with a defamation case lodged by Narmada Bachao Andolan leader Medha Patkar.

A court in New Delhi on Thursday asked the editor of an English daily to publish an "apology" in his paper as per the undertaking given in connection with a defamation case lodged by Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) leader Medha Patkar.

"The accused is directed to publish the apology in the newspaper as per the compromise arrived at between the parties before the Delhi High Court," Metropolitan Magistrate Munish Markan said.

"I am more than willing to withdraw the case against the editor and the publisher of the newspaper. But the apology, so far, has not been published," Patkar said during arguments.

The court fixed October 1 as the next date of hearing.
