In yet another case of relatives being involved, a 29-year-old man allegedly killed his aunt to pay off his gambling debts.
Police have arrested Bharat Aneja for allegedly murdering his aunt Rita (50). The incident happened on October 12 in South Anarkali area of Jagatpuri in east Delhi.

The police said that she was beaten up, strangulated and then struck at least thrice with the cricket bat.

“From the examination of the spot it seemed that some relative might have been involved in the murder,” said Anand Mohan, additional commissioner of police (east).

The investigating team came to know that during Rita’s funeral and last rites, Bharat, her nephew who lived in Meerut, had
not turned up.

“He was absconding from his house. We arrested him from near Race Course Meerut Cantonment area and interrogated him after which he confessed to the crime,” Mohan added.

The police said Bharat was unemployed and used to come to Delhi borrow money from his uncle and aunt.

“He came consecutively for three days starting from October 4 to his uncle’s house. On October 12, he with a came to Delhi around 5pm,” Mohan said.

The police said that his aunt was alone at that time and he asked her for some tea.

As she went into the kitchen Bharat started thrashing her and tried to strangulate her, the police said. Later, he
smashed her head with the cricket bat kept nearby. After allegedly killing her, he robbed her of her gold ornaments and fled.

The police said he left his cellphone at home bought a new set. He went to Meerut in the morning sold some of the gold ornaments for Rs 49,000 to a local jeweller, they added.

He then went to Rishikesh and stayed in Hotel Gaurav and then came to Meerut and stayed in Hotel Neeraj.

Bharat is married and has two children, the police added.
