Delhi may soon get a new medical college, courtesy the newly-formed North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC).

The corporation has approached the Medical Council of India (MCI) to start a medical college at the Hindu Rao hospital, near civil lines area.
"It will be our first big project since our inception and we are already in talks with the MCI. We hope to get an approval soon," said a senior NDMC official.

Hindu Rao hospital is already running nursing and diploma in anesthesia courses. "We have the required infrastructure and enough vacant land at the
Hindu Rao hospital, which is also one of the oldest functional hospitals in Delhi. The hospital caters to around 40 lakh people from north Delhi and the Walled city. A medical college attached to the hospital will only make the medical services better," the official added.

"The then unified MCD took over this hospital in 1958. There had been proposals to start a medical college. The proposal would now be tabled in the standing committee for approval. Following this, tenders would be floated," he said.

"The hospital still has enough space for expansion. The old building behind the medical block would be dismantled and a new academic block with hostels would come up there," said a senior health department officer.
