The victim, Nikhil Malhotra, was travelling in a Santro when an unknown vehicle hit him from behind. "Five people were travelling in the car. They were coming back from a New Year's party at Mehrauli in South Delhi. Malhotra was sitting in the back seat," said a senior police officer.

Malhotra was a resident of Green Park and worked in an NGO, Disha. The police said he was accompanied by two of his school friends, Nidhi Rastogi and Geetika Sarin.

"Malhotra left his car at a friend's place and had gone with him to the party. On their way back, he and his two friends came in the Santro car of one Nikhil, a resident of Gautam Nagar. Another girl, Niti -- a resident of CR Park -- also accompanied them," said a senior police officer.

The incident happened around 4:30 am while the car was coming from Bhati Mines towards Chattarpur. The police said an unknown vehicle, presumably a truck, hit the car from behind. Malhotra suffered severe injuries. His friends immediately called the ambulance and he was taken to AIIMS Trauma Centre. "By the time he reached the hospital he had lost a lot of blood. He died sometime later," said a senior police officer.

The police have registered a case of hit-and-run against unknown driver and are on his lookout.
