You might soon get to hear current affairs and spot news on FM channels.

The I&B Ministry is expected to change the FM policy by December to allow news on such channels in cities like Delhi and Mumbai. “We are not against news on FM channels but there are some monitoring related issues. FM news can first be allowed in selective areas with a monitoring mechanism,” said I&B Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi after a meeting of state information ministers on Wednesday.

For some time now, radio broadcasters have been demanding permission to air news along with entertainment on FM channels.

The exact framework of news on FM is expected in December after the ministry discusses it with the states and the home ministry. The home ministry had earlier expressed reservations, citing difficulty in monitoring news content on private radio stations in border and sensitive areas.
