Pushing the government agencies to implement the ban on diesel vehicles that are more than 15 years old, the National Green Tribunal on Monday asked agencies to identify sites to dump scrapped vehicles as soon as possible.

After the Delhi Development Authority submitted that it has proposed two such sites, the bench asked it to coordinate with the municipal corporations and identify space for more such spaces.

It also asked neighbouring states like Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan to meet with the Delhi government for identifying land to park these old vehicles banned from plying in the NCR.

The green court also directed the Union Ministry of Heavy Industries to frame a policy on incentives for scrapping vehicles, which are over 15 years old.

The directions came during the hearing of a petition filed by Vardhaman Kaushik over worsening air quality in Delhi.

The process to de-register around 2 lakh old diesel vehicles in Delhi started earlier this month. However, with no directions or guidelines available, the traffic police were worried about what needs to be done with these vehicles.

The traffic police has only eight pits with a capacity to accommodate 8,000 vehicles left to decay.
