Nizamuddin stray dogs ‘poisoned’

Delhi Police have registered a case against unknown people after five stray dogs were allegedly found poisoned to death in Nizamuddin east area of southeast Delhi on Friday, reports HT Correspondent.

Police said the residents’ welfare association complained about dogs being poisoned on Saturday.

“After we received the complaint we registered a case under section 429 of IPC (killing or maiming animals). We have sent the corpses for postmortem and are ascertaining the reason of death,” said a senior police officer on condition of anonymity.

Residents alleged that some birds, which fed on the dead dogs, were also found dead at a local park. They also said some residents, who were not comfortable with the canines, might have poisoned them.

Some dogs have been admitted to the veterinary hospital run by Frendicoes, an NGO.

A morning walker spotted the first dead canine.

“On Friday, two dogs were found dead and three were critical. Later they also died. We have picked up five others who are critical. All these dogs were healthy, sterilised and vaccinated,” said Gautam Barat, Frendicoes co-founder.

Some residents alleged that those of opposed to the presence of dogs in the area might have conspired to kill them.

The number of dead dogs was set to rise as five more corpses were found on Saturday evening.
