"It is very shameful and the BJP condemns it. Whatever is the due process of law should be taken on this," BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said.

Asked about claims by one of the attackers about being a member of the youth wing of the BJP, the spokesperson denied any connection.

"BJP has nothing to do with these people," she said.

"If the individual claims any association with the Yuva Morcha, the Yuva Morcha will give its clarification. We are equally shocked, I don't think this country can tolerate such violence whatever the reason may be," she said.

Bhushan was bashed up by some youths in his Supreme Court chamber in New Delhi on Wednesday. He blamed the assault, captured by a TV crew, on the rightwing Sri Ram Sene.

One of the attackers has been nabbed.
