The accident happened when the bus, plying on route number 729 between Kapashera and the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT), went out of control on the Ashok Road in New Delhi.

"The bus was going at about 70 kilometre per hour when the driver took a sharp turn and lost control and the bus hit a tree," a police official told IANS.

"A woman died on the spot and 20 people, including the driver, were injured," the official added.

The accident happened right in front of the Election Commission of India headquarters.

The injured were rushed to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. The condition of seven of them was stated to be serious.

"I boarded the bus from Minto Road. It was crowded with passengers and the accident was the result of over-speeding," said Hariram, a passenger in the bus.

Surjit, another passenger, said, "There was a stampede in the bus following the collision. There was chaos in the bus."

The privately owned Blueline buses, dubbed "killer buses", caused 120 deaths on the roads of the capital last year and the toll this year has reached 19 so far.
