While the online service has been in use for quite some time but till now taxpayers could make online payment only for the current year.

“We have received tremendous response to our online service. Presently property owners were able to pay tax only for the current year but now they will be able to pay tax of previous years too. We have upgraded our online service for that purpose,” said Vijendra Gupta, chairman of the MCD’s standing committee.

The civic agency has also decided to waive off penalty from those who have not paid their property tax till date, ever since the Unit Area Method of assessment came into existence in 2004.

Tax defaulters would now get a 75 per cent rebate on the interest they need to pay to the civic agency that has been accumulating for many years.

“We want more and more people to come into the tax net and so we have introduced this clause of waiving off the penalty to motivate all those taxpayers to pay their tax this year,” added Gupta.

The MCD has received tax worth Rs 753 crore till October and is hoping to collect Rs 1,400 crore by the end of the current financial year.

Non Resident Indians from 100 countries have also paid taxes online using the online service.

The MCD has collected Rs 173 crore more tax compared to the previous year. The increase is being attributed to increase in collection of arrears from different government agencies. These include Rs 106 crore from

Delhi government’s power generation company Transco, Rs 37 crore from Delhi Jal Board, Airport Authority of India, Jamia Millia Islamia among others.
