About 180 senior journalists who had been invited to the Home Minister’s Safdarjung Road residence received calls on Saturday morning saying the lunch had been called off in a gesture of respect to the grieving families of victims.

In his message to the families, the home minister said “I am shocked and grieved by the terrible tragedy that has consumed the lives of over a hundred pilgrims near Sabarimala. I offer my sincere condolences to the bereaved families.”
