Pending cases at all time high

In a written reply, Law Minister M Veerappa Moily said the figure of pending cases in the Supreme Court, 21 high courts and subordinate courts in the courts has gone up from 3.04 crore last year.

Moily provided the figures of pending cases since last five years, and it crossed the three crore mark in 2008. It has not shown any signs of reduction since then.

In another reply, the minister stated that 266 posts of judges were vacant in high courts of the country.

Presently, 629 judges were manning the 21 high courts against the approved strength of 895. As on March 31, the vacancies stood at 266.

The maximum number of vacancies were in the Allahabad High Court, which was facing a shortage of 84 judges, he said.
