The department has decided to approach the Delhi cabinet to either remove or at least relax the cap on the number of senior citizens who can get monthly pension so that they could accommodate more beneficiaries.

Officials at the social welfare department said there were more than 40,000 people above 60 years in age who had applied for the government's scheme of pension for the elderly but were yet to get the benefits.

The government has put a cap of 3.5 lakh people who can receive pension under this scheme but more than 3.86 lakh are already being given the monthly pension.

Officials said these 40,000 people had deposited their forms till August 2012.
