As the question hour was to start, BJP members led by Sushma Swaraj again protested against the use of the derogatory term against Vajpayee and forcing the PM to issue a statement in the house.

“I have learnt that an undesirable development took place. What a member of the ruling coalition said was not appropriate,” said the PM who returned from a 3-day tour to Russia.

“I on behalf of the government apologise to the house and feel that those words should not have been used,” he added.

Verma had referred to Vajpayee and other BJP leaders as “neech aadmi” (lowly people), sparking off strong protests from the Opposition benches.
