Home Minister Patil resigned earlier in the day in the wake of the massacre of 183 people in the Mumbai terrorist attack.

A press release issued by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said Chidambaram would look after "the portfolio of the ministry of home affairs and the prime minister shall look after the ministry of finance”.

The prime minister is already looking after the information and broadcasting ministry after his cabinet colleague Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi suffered a heart attack last month.
