Police deploys force to keep the peace at Delhi University’s North Campus

Delhi police has decided to keep 150 personnel deployed at North Campus following the series of protests by rival student groups.

More than 150 police personnel will be deployed at the Delhi University to maintain the peace at North Campus, which has been inundated by protests by different student groups over the last week. A series of demonstrations have been carried out in Delhi by students from the RSS-backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and other DU students, led by Left groups such as AISA.

Though no incidence of violence has been reported since an anti-ABVP rally near Ramjas College on February 22 was allegedly disrupted by ABVP members, the police don’t want to take any chances.

“One section of these policemen will be deployed in and around the Arts Faculty. The other group will patrol the campus. This will go on for the next one week to ensure there is no further trouble,” a senior police officer told HT.

The cops stationed there have been instructed to immediately call for additional forces at the first sign of trouble. “The police force will be deployed 24 hours at the campus till we decide that the situation is normalised,” said the officer.

Ever since violence erupted at DU’s Ramjas College on February 22, the university’s North Campus has resembled a fortress with as many as 800 police personnel deployed there on certain days.
