Clad in a black, polka-dotted shirt and cream-coloured pants, Sharma—who had once served as an officer on special duty (OSD) at the prime minister's Office (PMO)—wore a pensive expression on his face as he jumped into a white Hyundai Santro car around 8:35pm.

The car, being driven by his driver, was followed by another vehicle in which his family is understood to have reached the prison complex to receive him before proceeding to their residence in Panchkula.

Shivani Bhatnagar, a journalist with Indian Express, had been found murdered at her residence in IP Extension's Navkunj Apartments on January 23, 1999.
