Prachanda, who is on a five-day visit to India, drove down to Raj Ghat, the memorial of the Mahatma, to pay obeisance during his official visit in New Delhi.
The Nepalese leader had spearheaded the armed rebellion against monarchy in Nepal by remaining underground. Thousands of civilians were killed in numerous attacks by the Maoists to abolish monarchy.
Prachanda joined the political mainstream last year and his Communist Party Nepal (Maoist) laid down arms to participate in elections held earlier this year following which Nepal became Federal Democratic Republic.
