Pranab to take 'Swabhiman' to Rahul's constituency

Ahead of the UP polls, union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee will take the Centre's Swabhiman:-scheme to provide banking facilities for financial inclusion of rural areas -to Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi's parliamentary constituency, Amethi.

A review meeting with top bank officials followed by a public speech of the minister aimed to raise the awareness among the aam aadmi has been planned after the Parliament session. Gandhi too, may participate in this key programme of the ministry and an invitation has already reached Gandhi's office from the finance ministry.

Interestingly, on March 22, top officials of the public sector banks operating in the state held a review meeting in Lucknow for the entire state. But Mukherjee has chosen Amethi to hold his high-level meeting for Swabhiman. Apart from top bank officials, key finance ministry bureaucrats will also be present.

Top ministry sources told HT the preparations to take the Swabhiman scheme to Amethi had been going on for quite some time and now it has also received the young Gandhi's green signal.

The scheme aims to educate, inform and motivate people to open bank accounts.
