Prof, friend recall a quiet student of LSR

"I've known Aung San Suu Kyi since 1960, when we were teenagers at the Convent of Jesus Mary. In those days, she was a shy, gentle girl, with two plaits and a hint of arrowroot on her face. As we went on to study together at Lady Shri Ram College (LSR) and then at St Hugh's College, Oxford, I watched her evolve into a self-confident, attractive woman with very definite ideas — and an irrepressible sense of humour," said Malavika Karlekar, human right activist who has been working for the rehabilitation of Burmese refugees in India since 1990.

Suu Kyi's professor at LSR Nirmmala Khanna remembers her as "quiet, well balanced, soft spoken, and a good debater. She had in her blood to fight for rights of her people, her father being her inspiration."
