"We have issued notices to nine leading companies to remove the unauthorised and illegal display of their products by way of unipoles, wall wraps and roof-top hoardings," said Deep Mathur, director press and information, MCD.

Mathur said the companies have been given a 24-hour deadline, failing in which "strict action will be taken". The MCD will lodge police complaints against the offenders, he said.

During an inspection, the civic agency found these hoardings, which were illegally displayed across the city.

"The companies had not taken permission from the MCD permission to display their advertisement boards," added Mathur.
The companies have been informed that they have violated Section 3 of the Delhi Prevention of Defacement of Property Act 2007.

The Act states: "Whosoever defaces any property in public view by writing, marking with ink, chalk, paint or any other material except for the purpose of indicating the name and address of the owner or occupier of such property, shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine which may extend to Rs 50,000, or with both."

The new advertisement policy framed in 2008 states any hoarding or advertisement has to be first registered.
