PWD approves MCD request to set up parking lots
There is some relief in the offing for Delhiites jostling for space to park their cars as Public Works Department approves the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) request to set up parking lots on its roads, reports Neelam Pandey.
There is some relief in the offing for Delhiites jostling for space to park their cars. The Public Works Department has approved the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) request to set up parking lots on its roads.
This comes as a big relief to the civic body because the Traffic Police earlier objected to 89 parking lots maintained by the MCD. The decision was taken at an ad-hoc meeting of the Remunerative Project (RP) Cell on Thursday chaired by Mayor Arti Mehra.
“Now that authorised parking lots will come up on PWD roads, it will curb the parking mafias who have been operating on such roads,” said a senior MCD official.
The civic body is hoping to create more than 50 parking lots in areas including Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, ISBT, Rohini, Shaheed Park at ITO, near Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Hospital, MB road-Saket, Post office at ITO, behind Sales Tax Office at ITO, RU Block in Pitampura, Nanak Bhawan at ITO, Gandhi Nagar market, T-point Naraina, and MCD zonal office at Rohini.
“Earlier we used to allot parking space on PWD roads but the PWD opposed it vehemently. We had taken up the matter to higher authorities and now PWD has approval has been granted,” the official said.
“Many people had complained to us regarding high parking fees charged by the mafia. The approval will put an end to such practices.”
There are a total of 254 surface parking lots maintained by the civic agency. However, recently the Traffic Police raised objections to nearly 89 parking lots stating that they obstructed traffic.
Earlier, a meeting had been conducted at the Chief Secretary level to resolve the issue between the MCD and the PWD.
