According to police, the team of anti-auto theft squad of southeast district, comprising eight policemen in mufti, went to the area to nab a notorious auto-lifter. But local residents opposed them and “created a ruckus”.

But local residents claimed the team had already detained one person from the locality in the afternoon and had come again “to trouble other residents”.

Tension prevailed for about two hours but was later brought under control. By around 8pm, several companies of police were deployed in the area.

“The squad did not inform us before conducting the raid. We have handled such situation earlier as well, when the raiding cops did not inform the local police,” said an officer attached to Jamia Nagar station.
