Rape accused banned from taking exams

The students had filed a writ petition, contesting vice-chancellor (V-C) Najeeb Jung's order, forbidding them from writing their exams that start on Thursday. The high court on Wednesday upheld the vice-chancellor's decision.

"Four students from the university had been charged with the gang-rape and kidnapping of a minor girl. The V-C had placed them under suspension but they challenged it. The high court has upheld the V-C's decision," said Atiyab Siddiqui, chief standing counsel, Jamia Millia Islamia.

The students had contended that the charges were yet to be proven. All the four accused are currently lodged in Tihar jail.

"This is a very serious charge and since almost 30 per cent of Jamia's students are girls, it would have been a threat to their safety and security too, if no action was taken," Siddiqui said.
