Recharge your Metro cards at ATMs

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is exploring the technologies, which will be used for this facility. It is expected that the facility will be made available to commuters in six months, sources said.

“The technologies will be put in place in about six months and you will not have to queue outside ticket counters at Metro stations to get your travel card topped-up. Custom-made machines will be put in place at select ATM booths and retail outlets across NCR. Currently, we are in the process of identifying the ATM booths and retail outlets for the service. E-recharge options will also be made available,” said a DMRC official.

This is an initiative to decongest busy Metro stations, DMRC officials said.

Currently, smart cards can be purchased or recharged only by paying cash at specified counters or customer care centres at Metro stations. Due to increasing ridership, long queues are often seen at customer care centres or ticket counters of major stations.

“With this technology, commuters will be able to recharge their cards on computers from home. They can also do so while withdrawing money from ATMs or buying grocery from retail outlets,” said a DMRC spokesperson.

The DMRC will become the first-ever mass transport system in the country to introduce the unique technology.

Presently, 58 lakh Metro smart cards are in circulation in the Delhi Metro network. About 12,000 smart cards are sold every day from Metro stations, said officials.
