Road rage in Delhi: ACP beaten with helmet, rods

An assistant commissioner of police posted with the elite Special Cell of Delhi Police was seriously injured in a suspected road rage incident in south Delhi's Nizamuddin on Thursday evening.

An assistant commissioner of police (ACP) of the Delhi Police was seriously injured in an incident of road rage in south Delhi’s Nizamuddin area on Thursday.

The officer, Amit Singh, is posted with the Special Cell – the anti-terror wing of the police – and was not in uniform when his car was hit near Lodhi Crematorium by a Maruti Swift, driven by a 17-year-old. Neither Singh’s driver nor the Innova he was travelling in carried any identification mark.

Singh is the third policeman to be attacked in less than a week.

Following the collision, Singh’s driver gave chase to the Swift for around 200 metres and slapped the minor when he argued back after being asked to drive slowly, sources said.

The ACP then stepped out and intervened, said a senior police official. “Meanwhile, the teenager’s mother and her friend arrived on a motorcycle. They proceeded to attack the ACP even though his driver was screaming that they were assaulting a senior cop,” the officer added. The three attacked Singh with a helmet, steel knuckles and stones, injuring him in the head and fracturing his nose.

He was taken to the AIIMS Trauma Center where he was pronounced out of danger.

During the assault, a crowd of around 50 people gathered at the spot but chose to not intervene, sources said.

The three were caught by locals while attempting to flee in an auto rickshaw. All three have been taken into custody and cases been registered against them. The friend of the teenager’s mother was found to already have two criminal cases against him.
