Sacked doctor’s colleagues to meet health minister

In reaction to the sacking of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences' (AIIMS) senior resident doctor accused of sexually abusing an eight-year-old brain tumour patient, his friends and fellows from the neurology department are most likely to approach the Union health minister on Friday.

"The students (resident doctors) will be requesting the health minister to review the punishment, as the police inquiry is still pending. They might be asking the sacking to be converted into suspension till the police comes out with its report," said a senior resident doctor.

The AIIMS resident doctor's association (RDA) had to convene a meeting on Thursday to explain the situation, as they were flooded with calls from AIIMS' students wanting to know about the case.

The dismissal order issued by the hospital administration on Wednesday, a copy of which is with HT, read, "Actions of the accused doctor amount to conduct unbecoming of a medical doctor at the institute."

According to sources, the accused doctor will be challenging his dismissal in court. Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on Wednesday had ordered termination of the senior resident doctor on the basis of an internal inquiry report.

The boy underwent a surgery on January 20 and was admitted into the intensive care unit of the hospital on the evening of the incident on January 23. On pretext of examination, the doctor had allegedly indulged in oral sex with the minor.
