The Union home ministry has ordered a CBI probe into the gunning down of businessman Manoj Vashisht by the Delhi Police at a restaurant in the city nearly two months ago.
Vashisht’s family had met union home minister Rajnath Singh to urge him to transfer the probe from the Delhi Police to the CBI.
Vashisht was shot dead by a team of special cell of the Delhi Police at a Sagar Ratna restaurant in Rajendra Nagar on May 16. His family alleged that it was a fake encounter.
The Delhi police had claimed that a constable had shot at Vashisht in a bid to incapacitate him, on seeing him fire shots from his licensed revolver. This, they said, led to his death.
Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav had also assured the family of Vashisht, who belonged to Baghpat in the state, that he would seek a CBI probe in the case.
