Schoolgirls turn traffic cops for 2 hrs

These schoolgirls were invited by the police to regulate traffic and penalise violators as a part of the traffic-regulation month celebrations.

Briefed by senior police officials, around 55 girls were deployed at the busiest crossing at Old Bus Stand area. They penalised 238 violators, including seven cops and three women.

“It was a learning experience and we got to know how do traffic police work under such tough conditions. People generally break the rules, citing various reasons. They have to be handled in a tough, but polite manner,” said Rekha Singh, a traffic volunteer.

The drive yielded good results as traffic police managed to collect R46,300 as fine from violators for offences like driving without helmet and licence, using tinted car glasses, using beacon lights on private vehicles among others.

“These girls have taught us how to handle violators besides effectively managing resources,” said traffic inspector Pawan Kumar.

“It is a very difficult to handle women violators as our traffic department doesn’t have any women staff. But these students managed to fine women violators and directed them to obey traffic rules,” Kumar added.
