Schools take up Games projects with zest
Projects, songs, dances, quizzes and even exhibitions, schools in the capital are imbued with the Commonwealth Games (CWG) frenzy. Projects, songs, dances, quizzes and even exhibitions, schools in the capital are imbued with the Commonwealth Games (CWG) frenzy. With less than two months to go, schools have found a novel way of spreading awareness about the Games — integrating information about CWG with the curriculum.
With the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system or grading system being followed in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), some schools are assessing projects related to the Games as part of formative assessment.
"Students of class 6 to 12 are working on various projects related to CWG and the fact that they would be graded for their efforts, gives them added incentive to learn about the Games,” said Usha Ram, principal, Laxman Public School.
Who are the players coming to Delhi for the Games? How will CWG affect the city? Which are the Commonwealth nations and languages?
These are some of the topics that students of Springdales School, Dhaula Kuan are working on.
"Besides, these students will also be shown short films on who are the players, where do they come from, what are their records,” said principal Jyoti Bose.
The students, who would be divided into two batches — classes 6 to 8 and 9 to 12 — will also discuss various aspects of the organisation of the Games in the city.
The Shri Ram School, Vasant Vihar, had been planning CWG-related activities since July 2009.
"We did not want such a good opportunity to go by and wanted to link the Games with the teaching-learning process,” said principal Manika Sharma.
The school plans to teach its students about all the aspects of the Games through the various subjects.
"For instance, historical and environmental aspects can be integrated with history and civics, while the number of records, nations etc can be linked with mathematics,” she added.
Besides, the school has been inviting various personalities associated with sports and media for discussions.
The school has also put together a song, which comprises all the Commonwealth languages and is being used as an anthem for events leading up to the Games.
All efforts of the students would culminate in a grand exhibition of their projects, which would be held on October 1 in the school.
