Science smart, Commerce smarter

Even though it is an important course, Science is far less popular than B.Com (Pass and Hons.) programme, Economics (Hons.) and English (Hons.) courses, reports Karan Choudhury.

Science has taken a beating again at the hands of Commerce. Most of the colleges have witnessed a slow start to the admissions in their Science courses this year. Even though it is an important course, Science is far less popular than B.Com (Pass and Hons.) programme, Economics (Hons.) and English (Hons.) courses.

While seats for these courses are being filled up, courses like Bsc. (Hons.), Physical Science and Applied Physics are finding few takers.

Dr. Ruchi Tyagi, Political Science reader in Kalindi College said, “Students nowadays do not want to opt for pure science courses. The admissions in these courses are going at a slow rate in our college as well. Even if a large number of students do take admissions we are left with a lesser number by the start of the new academic session.”

One of the reasons behind students leaving pure science courses is that most of them sit for competitive exams like engineering and medical. The students who get through never turn up to take admissions in such courses.

Dr. Ramesh Sharma, principal Moti Lal College said, “As compared to Commerce courses the number of students getting admitted in our colleges is far less. We are banking on the second cutoff list to get more students.”

Many science students also opt for Commerce courses, as they are considered commercially more viable and in tune with current market demands. It also becomes easier for many students in their pursuit for an MBA.

But some colleges are satisfied with the response of DU applicants towards their science courses. The seats for courses like Microbiology and Physics (Hons.) are fast filling up in Gargi College. “We hope to fill our Microbiology and Physics (Hons.) courses in the first list itself. But for Bsc., Botany and Zoology we will have to wait for the second cutoff list.”

Hansraj College has seen steady admissions in their science courses. But they are waiting for the second list as well.
