Sanjay Parmanik, hailing from Midnapur in West Bengal, committed the theft when his employer, Gunjan Mubayi, was in the US, police said.
Chhaya Sharma, deputy commissioner of police (south), said, "Mubayi complained to us about the theft after she returned from US. Her complaint was registered and investigation initiated," said Sharma.
During investigation, a senior investigating officer said, it was learnt that the complainant had hired Parmanik as her temporary servant since her regular servant Ajay was on leave.
"Parmanik was apprehended and after interrogation, he broke down and confessed his crime," a senior police officer said.
"To mislead the police, he sold some of the jewellery to different jewellers in his hometown and Delhi," the officer added.
