The demonstrators gathered at Teen Murti near the diplomatic area of Chanakyapuri to denounce the arson attack of the gurudwara that was under construction in Melbourne Tuesday.

They carried placards that read "Down with Aussie" and "Stop racial attacks". Australian authorities insist that the attacks are not racist in nature.

"They were protesting against racial attacks on Indian students and the gurudwara in Australia. They dispersed after a group submitted a memorandum to the Australian high commission," said a police official.

Several Indians have been attacked in recent months in Australia, causing strains in ties between New Delhi and Canberra.
