"If the government has acquired the land, it cannot lawfully return it. Can it?" Mukherjee said at a Press conference.

He also dismissed Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee's statement that the agreement is a victory for farmers unwilling to part with their land.

"What victory is she talking about? The whole agreement is confusing and there is no concrete proposal there on the quantum of land to be distributed among the farmers," he said. "If it is a win for farmers, why didn't Banerjee withdraw the dharna? Why did she suspend it?"

The former Kolkata mayor was critical of the Governor's role in forging the pact. "The Governor initially said he could not preside over the meeting owing to Constitutional issues but then, all of a sudden, changed his mind. Why and how nobody knows," he said.

"Every word of the agreement evokes confusion," he said, concluding his argument. "Neither Banerjee nor the Chief Minister is telling the truth. We want the people to know the truth. We are only satisfied that the Tatas are not leaving."
