"The building had developed cracks after Monday's rain," a police officer said, adding that the foundation too had been weakened by an overflowing drain beneath it.
The dead included Hashmi Begum (61), her sons Mohammad Nafees (27), Mohammad Nadeem (25) and Mohammad Azeem (23) and daughters-in-law Shagufta (25) and Ayesha (24). The sole survivor was Rubina (22), Azeem's wife.
A neighbour, Chotelal, said the family had planned to move out on Wednesday so repairs could be done but the structure had collapsed while they slept. Another, Pramod Kumar, said the family had moved in only in December. Locals said tenants on the ground floor had cleared out on Tuesday itself.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has ordered an enquiry.
