Social media reacts to death sentence in Delhi gang-rape

It was a verdict the entire country had been waiting for and when the judge finally sentenced to death the four men convicted in the December 2012 gang-rape and murder of a 23-year-old woman in Delhi, social media streamed with reactions.

Welcoming judge Yogesh khanna's announcement that the gang-rape had "shocked the collective conscience of India", women activists, polticians, Bollywood celebrities and common people across, gender, economic, and social lines thronged to Twitter to express sentiments ranging from relief, delight and satisfaction to disbelief.

Like all death sentences, Khanna's order must be confirmed by a higher court. The men can appeal their case to the High Court, as well as to the Supreme Court, and ask the President for clemency.

However, that did not deter social media users from reflecting on the sentence.

Many took to Twitter to express how they had longed for justice in the Delhi gang-rape case, with some hoping this case did not remain the "rarest of rare", but was a way forward as far as punishment for crimes against women was concerned.

Many, like actress and model Gul Panag, among others, also vented out their feelings against lawyer AP Singh, who has worked with all four defendents at some point during the trial.

Critisising Singh for shouting at the judge after the convicts broke down in court, following the sentence, Panag tweeted: "Mr AP Singh is living proof of the evils of patriarchy and misogyny."
