Some super thief: Bunty nabbed again

Long before Bunty Aur Babli, there was Bunty Chor – the ‘super thief’ who made sleight of hand his way of life. For the fourth time, the Delhi Police got on to his trail, when they noticed an all-too-familiar pattern in a series of burglaries reported from New Friends Colony, Greater Kailash, CR Park and Malviya Nagar. He was picked up from South Extension-I on Saturday. And he wasn’t repentant; instead, he said he wanted to break into film stars’ houses and steal more ‘expensive’ stuff from there.

His hallmark is his fetish for ‘collecting’ fancy cars, jewellery, watches and electronic items. This time, the police recovered a Honda Civic, a Mitsubishi Lancer, four laptops, a Rado watch and assorted gold jewellery.
Anil Shukla, DCP South, said that Bunty had promised to reform when he was released last October after a four-year term in prison. “But he told us that he was back at his old job just 12 days after release. He’s even found himself a Nepalese bride.”

Naturally, Bunty made Kathmandu circuit a base. “He procured a fake passport in the name of Hari Thapa, and changed his hairstyle to look like a Nepalese,” added Shukla.

He’s also been active in Mumbai too: decamping with a tourist’s bag containing a laptop and $ 1,500 from the Taj Mahal hotel and unsuccessfully trailing a well-known Bollywood actress since he wanted to steal an expensive piece of jewellery from her. In Delhi, Bunty stole a diplomatic card from a bureaucrat’s house — with which he could have gained entry into Vigyan Bhavan — and gold jewellery from Le Meridien hotel.
